Phrao to Wiang Pa Pao

Monday October 9, 2017, 33 miles (53 km) - Total so far: 696 miles

Tough day. Beautiful road though, probably one of the best roads we've ridden in terms of views. You spend a lot less time in the trees than on other mountain sections, although that does make it a bit on the warm side! The road changes character significantly once you're over the 'top' - watch for potholes and undergrowth taking over. Not sure if we changed province?

It's a bit of a mean ride, as there are several smaller climbs after you've conquered the main beast. There's also almost nowhere to refuel - one tiny shop, and maybe one restaurant, both after halfway going in this direction. So take provisions. At least it's not too long.

We couldn't find much accommodation (on eg google etc) in Wiang Pa Pao itself, so headed a few Ks towards Chiang Mai to give ourselves some options. On the ride north the following day, we actually saw plenty, and being in the main town would probably give more food options too.

We stayed at Bighouse Hotel, which is excellent for cyclists. Huge rooms with enclosed but almost outdoor spaces at the back - perfect for bikes. The rooms themselves are spotless and in good nick, same for the bathrooms. The shower was even hot! And all for 350 baht. I think there was breakfast available, but we were out too early the next day.

There's a 7-eleven a short walk along the main road towards Chiang Mai, plus two eating places. We tried the second (a noodle shop) but they didn't do veggie, so we ended up at the Fullhouse resort. This place gets terrible reviews on TripAdvisor, but actually it was fine, bordering on decent! Large portions too, which was definitely appreciated.

We self-catered in the evening.

Stunning views all day
