Wiang Pa Pao to Chiang Rai
Tuesday October 10, 2017, 56 miles (91 km) - Total so far: 752 miles
(1,211 km)
The first chunk of this passed by pretty quickly. There are a couple of bumps to wake your legs up from the previous day, but otherwise it's pretty flat. Then the traffic starts to grate a bit, and you'll literally be hanging out for the turn off! We turned after 59K from Bighouse hotel which was, I think by the 35K milepost. You have a reasonable climb to start with, but this very pleasant rural road eventually joins the 1211 which takes you all the way into Chiang Rai, and has the added bonus of passing Monkey Coffee which is a lovely spot (not to mention extremely cheap - 60 baht for two drinks!)
We are staying at Huan Kawin, which is a lovely spot. Small homestay-style place, all dark teak and oodles of character. 400 baht for a lovely aircon room and breakfast (shared bathroom, but hasn't been a problem). Nice people too, and in a quiet spot that's still close enough to the night bazaar etc.
Lunch was at Tamacha veggie place - standard jai fare, plus a very friendly
lady who spoke great English.
Dinner was a snack from this place: https://www.happycow.net/reviews/tue-kha-
and-fried-tofu-chiang-rai-86076 and then a couple of dishes from the food
court at the night bazaar (A fun spot).
