Prey Veng to Kampong Cham

Saturday December 16, 2017, 48 miles (77 km) - Total so far: 2,666 miles

(4,291 km)

A good day's cycling. We started off cycling through countryside, then it was a long stretch of civilisation, then up onto a fertile plain where lots of large-scale agriculture is taking place. Then it's downhill most of the way to Kampong Cham. There's quite a difference between highway 11 and highway 7, but the 7 is still ok (fairly busy, but we are used to that now). There's a shoulder in some places, and the surface is pretty good. Note - we think they may be widening highway 11 so who knows what chaos that may bring.

Kampong Cham is a lovely spot right on the river. Nice riverside promenade, some pleasing architecture, and just enough tourists to support a few decent restaurants and guesthouses. We're staying at Mekong Crossing, which is much nice than I expected! Spotless room with fan and hot water, nicely decorated and comfy bed, for $7. It's $1 more for river view, although we can see it from our room anyway.

We had lunch at Destiny coffee, which wasn't actually that great. Fine, but limited menu for veggies.
I had a second lunch at the guesthouse restaurant, a really excellent Khmer curry.
For dinner, we had pizza at Lazy Mekong Daze - surprisingly good, and the chef is lovely!
There's a bit of a night market along the promenade, with a few food stalls and lots of locals. Nice atmosphere.
