We\nwere a little taken aback by both the volume of traffic (80 0.000000oreign) on the\nroad along the Soca valley approaching Kobarid, and also the sheer number of\npeople at the campsite, where we snagged one of their last small tent pitches.\nTurns out we're the only people who hadn’t heard of the area….. English is\nwidely spoken, and most young people we interacted with appeared to be fluent\nor close to.
\n
Things were a lot quieter as we headed South and, while the high mountains\nshrank into the distance, the countryside remained bucolic. Green green green,\nmeadows everywhere, and so much produce. We also didn’t encounter a road that\ncame close to the one near Kobarid traffic-wise for the remainder of our stay,\nor a campsite quite so full to bursting. Note that not much of the country is\nparticularly flat…...this holds true at least for the western areas that we\nvisited. We encountered some very steep sections!
\n
Komoot kept us off the main roads for the most part, finding country lanes and\nthe occasional cycle path - far , far fewer of these than in Italy, but\ntraffic remained courteous. There are lots of campsites, most of which come in\nat about 25-28 euros for two people and a small tent. All were of a good\nstandard, usually with bar-restaurants which was good for a cold beer of an\nevening, and many offering fresh bread in the morning. The bars often have\nfree wifi. Our favourite campsite was probably Kamp Tura, where the lady is\ntoo lovely for words, and the pitches are all terraced and car-free. Be warned\nthough, it is up a very long, very steep hill!!
\n
Food prices were a little higher than we were used to in Italy, but this was\nmostly due to Lidl being less prolific. We saw more of both Lidl and Hofer\n(Austrian Aldi) once we were in the vicinity of Ljubljana. Shops were well\nstocked, and we were delighted to be able to find porridge oats ( which are\nlike hen’s teeth in Italy!).
\n
While foreign tourists were present in all regions, we were intrigued that the\nSavinja river valley was far more the domain of Slovenian holidaymakers. It’s\na very beautiful area too - highly recommended.
\n
We’d definitely encourage others to tour in Slovenia, just try and avoid peak\nseason!!
\n
<span\n      class=\"gatsby-resp-image-wrapper\"\n      style=\"position: relative; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;  max-width: 800px;\"\n    >\n      <a\n    class=\"gatsby-resp-image-link\"\n    href=\"/static/8744c4cf7043c3c7f2dee631cfd1b0d2/644c5/BA823232-2A60-4A3B-B0C5-CD1FED178FD7.jpg\"\n    style=\"display: block\"\n    target=\"_blank\"\n    rel=\"noopener\"\n  >\n    <span\n    class=\"gatsby-resp-image-background-image\"\n    style=\"padding-bottom: 69.5%; position: relative; bottom: 0; left: 0; background-image: url('data:image/jpeg;base64,/9j/2wBDABALDA4MChAODQ4SERATGCgaGBYWGDEjJR0oOjM9PDkzODdASFxOQERXRTc4UG1RV19iZ2hnPk1xeXBkeFxlZ2P/2wBDARESEhgVGC8aGi9jQjhCY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2P/wgARCAAOABQDASIAAhEBAxEB/8QAFwABAAMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAECBf/EABYBAQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEAAv/aAAwDAQACEAMQAAAB1JWwBP8A/8QAFhABAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAECEB/9oACAEBAAEFAq5X/8QAFREBAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARD/2gAIAQMBAT8BJ//EABYRAAMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEQIf/aAAgBAgEBPwExf//EABQQAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACD/2gAIAQEABj8CX//EABoQAAIDAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAERABAhMUH/2gAIAQEAAT8hGtnvcpgZjr//2gAMAwEAAgADAAAAEEQP/8QAFhEBAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAQAR/9oACAEDAQE/EEJpbf/EABYRAQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEQEf/aAAgBAgEBPxAKxn//xAAaEAEAAwEBAQAAAAAAAAAAAAABABEhQTFh/9oACAEBAAE/EDgmvkBsqR5MOXGnq8hqpp1Z/9k='); background-size: cover; display: block;\"\n  >\n  <img\n        class=\"gatsby-resp-image-image\"\n        alt=\"Our route through Slovenia\"\n        title=\"Our route through Slovenia\"\n        src=\"/static/8744c4cf7043c3c7f2dee631cfd1b0d2/4b190/BA823232-2A60-4A3B-B0C5-CD1FED178FD7.jpg\"\n        srcset=\"/static/8744c4cf7043c3c7f2dee631cfd1b0d2/e07e9/BA823232-2A60-4A3B-B0C5-CD1FED178FD7.jpg 200w,\n/static/8744c4cf7043c3c7f2dee631cfd1b0d2/066f9/BA823232-2A60-4A3B-B0C5-CD1FED178FD7.jpg 400w,\n/static/8744c4cf7043c3c7f2dee631cfd1b0d2/4b190/BA823232-2A60-4A3B-B0C5-CD1FED178FD7.jpg 800w,\n/static/8744c4cf7043c3c7f2dee631cfd1b0d2/e5166/BA823232-2A60-4A3B-B0C5-CD1FED178FD7.jpg 1200w,\n/static/8744c4cf7043c3c7f2dee631cfd1b0d2/644c5/BA823232-2A60-4A3B-B0C5-CD1FED178FD7.jpg 1440w\"\n        sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\n        style=\"width:100%;height:100%;margin:0;vertical-align:middle;position:absolute;top:0;left:0;\"\n        loading=\"lazy\"\n      />\n  \n
","frontmatter":{"date":null,"path":"/journal/189","title":""}}},"pageContext":{}}}
