Bubendorf to Huningue

Sunday September 23, 2018, 18 miles (28 km) - Total so far: 6,391 miles

(10,286 km)

We had planned to ride to Mulhouse today. We were a little late setting off due to a wet tent, and also the distraction of a steam train festival right next to the campsite. Lovely little train and people in traditional dress playing very long horns very well.

We retraced our steps to Liestal and then followed the route through Basel. The old part of the city is lovely, and it was very quiet (Sunday). The disadvantage of it being Sunday, of course, is that nearly all supermarkets are closed. But not Spar! We found one, and I spent our last francs in change on ovomaltine products to keep Ed happy (try the chocolate if you're ever in Switzerland!)

Outside Spar, a friendly guy was chatting to us and told us there was a storm coming. We didn't think much of it until it started getting very windy..... We were surprised, on reaching the border, to cross into Germany!! But we could see France just across the Rhine. We stopped and had our lunch while deciding what to do.

Both the French and German met services had issued severe weather warnings for wind and thunderstorms, so we decided to stop at the nearby campsite. It looked like the worst would blow through by early evening, so we could wait to pitch the tent. So, we spent the night at 'Camping au petit port' after a very short day!

It's a municipal campsite, i.e. fairly rudimentary but perfect for us. Our cheapest in Europe so far at just €14.84! There's even a covered seating area to shelter from approaching storms ;)

We chatted to a German guy on a recumbent who had cycled from Düsseldorf to Nantes, then back east via Italy, and will now ride home in just 6 days. Total trip 2 months - I thought it sounded like a long way so asked him where he's heading today....Strasbourg!!! That's 240km along Eurovelo 5.....so maybe 'only' 200km if he takes a more direct route. We're expecting to take 4 days' riding!!
