Days off in New Plymouth and Egmont National Park
New Plymouth is a pleasant spot. There's a fabulous veggie cafe that does a buffet at lunch time - pile your plate high for great value! It's called Loving Hut. EmmaLou is great for coffee and food as well. We walked a tiny bit of the coastal walkway, which looks lovely. And popped into the i-site which is huge, has free wifi, a cafe and a museum. There's some art deco architecture dotted around, plus some cool street art. We only scratched the surface - plenty to do here!
We had a wonderful time hiking the Pouakai circuit, and would recommend it to others. It isn't actually very long, but there are a lot of steps on the plentiful ascent / descent....so after 6 months of mostly only cycling, our legs are no longer talking to us! We had absolutely perfect weather, so the views were sublime. If you fancy it, we also recommend the Mountain Shuttle to get you up there. $35 each (return) which seems very reasonable, and Ian is also a tour guide so can tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the area.
A few days very well spent for sure!
