Kawhia to Marakopa

Monday March 5, 2018, 44 miles (71 km) - Total so far: 3,987 miles

(6,417 km)

Beautiful riding back along Kawhia harbour and up up up. Gorgeous views - and a very quiet road. It was one of those days that cyclists rave about - ie be scared, it’s tough!! Well worth it, however. We even met some other cyclists - an Aussie couple riding E-mountain bikes. Now that is a concept I could get onboard with ;). They’d ridden the Timber Trail and another (Mountains to Sea?) with a group, supported. And are now making their way back to Auckland - staying in B&Bs; and carrying very little stuff - not that we’re jealous……

They didn’t rate Marakopa at all and told us about a B&B; that also offers camping. It’s called Awamarino, and is about 10km before you reach Marakopa. There’s also some farm accommodation (including camping) a bit further on. We decided to keep going, and were glad we did as we really liked it! A camper rally was installed at the site, making it pretty busy, but the people were super-friendly and all wanting to talk to us. Our neighbour gave us cupcakes! There’s a lovely cat, and the kitchen / social area is huge and well equipped (if a little dated). The showers are great too (and no extra charge). Be warned that the only shop is the tiny one at the campsite reception - definitely bring provisions! They do not sell wine but they do have ice creams and crisps, phew :)

Chatting with friendly Aussie E-MTBers. This is a concept I could get on board with!
