Kangar to Alor Setar

Sunday January 21, 2018, 38 miles (61 km) - Total so far: 3,116 miles

(5,015 km)

We started out following this route from the Jarmans:

which is great - nice quiet backroads and lovely scenery. However, we were feeling frustrated with our slow progress (mostly because we overslept and set off far too late!) so bailed out onto the main road for the last 20km. It was ok, busy enough to be noisy and not that much fun, but we felt safe enough. It's a bit bumpy in places though, and the shoulder comes and goes. Nice views though!

Once in Alor Setar, we headed straight to a veggie restaurant that was in fact closed (apparently today is the Sultan of Kedah's birthday, which may explain why so many places are shut up). Fortunately, there was another veggie restaurant on the other side of the road - Casa Station. Very similar to the buffet places we frequented in Thailand, but the food was more Chinese in style. Very tasty, very cheap, and self-service as a bonus. The staff were friendly too.

We are staying at Bee Garden Motel, which is a bit basic and tatty, but in a great location. Our bikes are in their dining room so it's a good cycling option, AND if you book on Agoda (which we didn't!) it is literally half the walk-in price (at the moment anyway).

Big day to Georgetown tomorrow, better set our alarms!
