Kampong Kdei to Siem Reap
Thursday December 21, 2017, 39 miles (62 km) - Total so far: 2,827 miles
(4,550 km)
Highway 6 continued to be smooth and wide, although progressively busier. We met a solo lady from Belgium, who had stayed with a family in a small village last night. We saw two other cyclists, but they didn't stop. If you spot it, there's a nice little coffee place called 'Bonjour Coffee' - I can't remember quite where it is but it wasn't too far out of Kampong Kdei...maybe just over 20km. Look out for the sign on the left. No menu, but the guy speaks a bit of English, and a bit more French!
We were also pleased to find the stalls we'd heard about that sell sticky rice and beans cooked in bamboo. There are literally about 100 stalls in a row so you actually can't miss them! It's great snack. We stopped on a side road to a temple to eat ours, which caused much excitement amongst the local kids. So funny.
The road deteriorates slightly for the last few km into Siem Reap - not so wide, and the shoulder is sandy. It's also pretty busy. It's fine, just be ready for it - I was glad we didn't get there after a long day.
We're staying at Siem Reap Phan Villa - $12 for a smallish room but we have aircon and a fridge, and the people are lovely. It's a fairly quiet spot (weddings not withstanding) a little removed from the hectic centre, but still very walkable. We actually stayed the first two nights around the corner and have left our bikes there - there isn't an obvious spot for them here, but I expect the family would let you bring them inside - the hallways are very spacious.
And that's it for a while! Two sets of friends are visiting so we're off the bikes. 4 nights here, bus to Bangkok, 4 nights in Bangkok, train to Surat Thani. We'll then cycle to Krabi which I will document, but then we have around 10 nights in the Krabi area.
