Chiang Saen to Chiang Khong

Saturday October 14, 2017, 42 miles (68 km) - Total so far: 837 miles

(1,347 km)

We'd planned to ride to Huay Xai today. The ride started well, along the 1290 with a wonderful spell along the 4007 to miss out the biggest hill. Then we rejoined the 1290, conquered the next biggest hill.....and hit roadworks. Or, should I say, deep mud with sliding vehicles and road rollers to avoid! It went on for several km - we had to walk. Not impressed.....

So, we've stopped in Chiang Khong. We're staying at Namkhong guesthouse and resort. 250 baht for a cool wooden room with fan and outside bathroom (hoping the bugs steer clear!) Very friendly host let us use their hose to sort the bikes. There's a lovely pool - it's lush. We're staying tomorrow too :) then planning an early start the following day to catch the slow boat (we don't really mind if we miss it!)

Breakfast was self catered.
Morning drinks at Moom Mai on the 1290 - great spot, cheap.
Lunch was at the wonderful Cafe Lao, and pretty much saved the day.
Dinner was at PadThai Baan Yim - excellent and cheap. Followed up with a roti from the stall outside 7-eleven.

Chiang Khong has a wonderful setting on the Mekong, and an appealing early evening market. A good place to gather oneself!

Oh my.
